The name Bahamas has not been determined whether it came from the natives Tainos phrase “ba ha ma” meaning big upper middle land or the Spanish word “baja mar” that means shallow water, reflecting the shallow waters of the area.
History: The area was settled by the British, but the island of San Salvador; previously Guanahani was the first island that Columbus discovered in 1492. Pirates loved the Bahamas and it was a safe place for slaves after 1807 (UK abolished slave trade). Now the area is known for its big tourism industry offering big hotels, nice beaches and clear waters.
Capital: Nassau Language: English. Currency: US Dollar and Bahamian Dollar. Population: Approx. 393,000 Climate: The climate is mostly warm and Tropical storms and hurricanes can on occasion impact the Bahamas during the summer. Travel: There are several transportation options to travel between the islands in the forms of small airlines and fast ferries.
For scuba diving and snorkeling sites the archipelago of Bahamas has lots to offer. Some of the most visited are the massive Andros Island Barrier Reef and the black-coral gardens off Bimini Island. Some of the best wreck in the Bahamas: Hesperus/Turtle Wreck (island of Bimini), Tears of Allah and Vulcan Bomber from the James Bond movies (New Providence), Theo's Wreck (Grand Bahama Island), Airplane wreck #2 (Coco Cay in the Berry Islands) and Austin Smith Wreck (Exumas Cays).
